Heaven Dog Swallows the Sun

To the ancient Chinese, the eclipse was a sun-eating dragon which had to be chased away with clashing cymbals and pans. In Hindu mythology, a spiteful demon called Rahu takes a bite out of the Sun from time to time.

The first known record of an eclipse was made in the reign of Zhong Kang, the fourth emperor of China's Xia dynasty.

Because we know that several solar eclipses took place around that time, astronomers are uncertain of the exact date when this event took place - it could be 2128 or 2134 BC.

But even then, the brief text shows that the eclipse was clearly mind-blasting.

'In the fifth year of Zhong Kang, in the autumn, in the ninth month, on the first day of the month, there was an eclipse of the Sun, when he ordered the Prince of Yin to lead the imperial forces to punish Hsi and Ho,' says the record.

Hsi and Ho, according to legend, are two astrologers of the Imperial Court who were beheaded because they had failed to warn the boss that the Sun would be blotted out.

Today, a total solar eclipse remains a stunning sight and a humbling reminder of human puniness, but mathematics have taken the sting out of superstition.

Eclipses occur because of a weird symmetry. The Sun is 400 times wider than the Moon, but it is also 400 times farther away. As a result, when the Moon is perfectly in line between the Earth and the Sun, for those in the complete lunar shadow, the entire solar surface is covered.

The Sun turns black, leaving just a golden halo. The stars are blotted out and the sky turns indigo.

The 4 Mu Ku

They represent storage; clash it and your wealth is unlocked.

They are also known as graveyard; enter it and you lose your soul.

You either love or hate them.

They are mysterious. They hide many things. They carry the unknowns. They make you feel lonesome. They cause the world to be uncertain.

Bazi practitioners split their hair when they encounter bazi charts born in such month.

There are 4 of them - 2 wet and 2 dry. I rather have either 2 wet or 2 dry than one wet and one dry.

Have too many, you become spiritual, and at times, you procrastinate.

NB:

This year, be careful of minor accident when driving if you have one of the 4 friends in your chart cos' the Ox has a destructive relationship with him.

Remember not to follow the car in front of you too closely. My customers and friends have related to me their recent experience - they knocked into the car in front of them but due to no fault of theirs. They shared the same sentiments of being "sabotaged" by the car in front. They have never ever expected it.

Well, I can only say it is Mu Ku at play.

Sri Lankan astrologer arrested after predicting President Rajapaksa’s exit

If I were him, I am not sure if I should feel flattered (since the Head of State also has some regards for him) or lousy (for not foreseeing the consequence).

Perhaps he already knows this is something predestined and he has to go through it?

Hits and misses:

• Myint Lwin, an astrologer from Burma, apologised to the country in May 2008 for failing to predict Cyclone Nargis.

• A Russian astrologer, Marina Bai, sued Nasa in 2005 for crashing a probe into a comet, saying it had distorted her horoscope. Her case was eventually rejected

• British spies hired an astrologer during the Second World War, Louis de Wohl. He was sent to the US on a propaganda mission where he duly (and correctly) predicted doom for the Nazis
